“But we knew that would even out, it’s a case of coming through that period. We believe we’re coming through that period.”

And Jones showered special praise on Campbell for waiting patiently for his chance to shine.

“I’m pleased for him,” said Jones. “He has a lot of attributes which are very pleasing for a manager.

“He’s got pace and the lad can finish. He’s had to be patient and trust us with his development, but now we’re starting to see a little bit.”

Campbell, son of the former Everton and Arsenal striker Kevin, made only his second league start of what has been a sorry season for the Staffordshire club.

But the 19-year-old grabbed the opportunity as the Potters won at home for the first time since a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest back in March.

It was also Campbell’s first-ever league goal for Stoke. And Gregory’s cool 80th-minute penalty, after substitute Scott Hogan had been fouled by keeper Marcus Bettinelli, made sure of maximum points.

Fulham boss Scott Parker stressed: “It’s a defeat. It’s not a head-on collision and it’s not something which is a massive issue, but it’s a bump. How we bounce back will ultimately determine how we do this year.”
