Cyprus ‘rape’ teen’s terror over hell jail

She fears return to cell nightmare

- From JEREMY ARMSTRONG in Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Keynes were closed yesterday morning for several hours.

The smash happened in an area which had been recently upgraded to a “smart motorway” with the installation of a “dynamic hard shoulder” which can be used as a fourth lane during times of heavy congestion.

Normal traffic conditions are due to resume today.

THE British teen convicted of making up a gang rape on Cyprus is dreading a nightmare return to prison on the island.

The 19-year-old is due in court on Tuesday and faces up to a year behind bars.

It is alleged Cypriot police “threatened” the girl to make her withdraw claims of an attack by 12 Israeli youths in the resort of Ayia Napa.

But the retraction saw her convicted instead on a charge of “public mischief ”.

And that means she could end up back in Nicosia jail – where she spent more than a month awaiting her trial.

Michael Polak, director of campaign group Justice Abroad, said: “We fear a custodial sentence.

“She has spent four and a half weeks in Nicosia prison already.

“To go back would be so damaging for her. Some of the prison guards treated her badly.

“She’s never been in trouble with the law before, she was just a teenager about to go off to university. For a 19-year-old to share a cell with eight others is a nightmare. But for someone with post-traumatic stress disorder, that is the last place she should be.”

An appeal against her conviction could take up to three years.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has spoken to the mother of the Midlands teenager, who’s not being named, to offer assistance. Police claimed the girl had felt “embarrassed” at being videoed having consensual sex with one of the boys after a holiday romance. The alleged attack by the group aged 16 to 19 is said to have happened afterwards.

The police version has come under fire after it was revealed the girl was taken for emergency treatment after running from the hotel.

It was a concerned medic who called police.

In an editorial about the case, the Jerusalem Post warned of “the depths to which Israeli society has plummeted where it’s seen as perfectly normal behaviour to share a sexual partner and film the proceedings”.

For someone with PTSD, a cell is the last place for her to be MICHAEL POLAK JUSTICE ABROAD CAMPAIGNER
