‘Brewster can spark Prem bid’

- BY HARRY PRATT

ON-LOAN Liverpool teenager Rhian Brewster can be the spark to reignite Swansea’s promotion charge.

That’s the optimistic message from Swans legend Leighton James ahead of his former club’s lunchtime trip to bitter rivals Cardiff today.

After starting the season under new boss Steve Cooper by winning five of their opening six games, the Welsh club were riding high at the top of the Championship.

Since then, though, the board’s policy of constantly selling their star assets, following relegation from the Premier League in 2017-18, has come back to bite them.

Eight defeats in the next 18 outings meant Cooper’s troops began the weekend clinging on to sixth place – a point clear of the chasing pack.

Yet, despite fearing the worst regards those play-off ambitions, former Wales international James now believes they are back in the mix – especially if Anfield striker Brewster fulfils expectations.

James, who starred for Swansea during their first spell in the top tier in the early 1980s, admitted: “The young lad from Liverpool looks a very good signing.

“If Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Everton last weekend – with all Jurgen Klopp’s kids playing so well – is anything to go by, we have an exciting, quality player.

“He should help lift the mood of the fans, who have seen the club’s American owners selling our best players every window. Rhian is exactly what we need.”

A hostile derby against Cardiff, who are four points behind Swansea, will be some debut for England Under-21 international Brewster, 19.

“If he doesn’t know what the rivalry with Cardiff is all about, he will after Sunday. It’ll be a real test of character,” added James.
