Telly Sherrie battles the Benidorm blues

She’s desperate for more nights of Spanish mayhem

Sherrie Hewson is pining for another night down Neptune’s… and she’s still got her gladrags.

The Benidorm fave is piling the pressure on creator Derren Litten to bring back the cult hit.

The sun set on the ITV expat sitcom in 2018 – but with repeats showing during lockdown, the campaign to bring it back has been renewed.

Sherrie says: “Benidorm was the most amazing job. We were out there for six months of the year for 10 years. Everyone who came out didn’t go home. They paid for their own hotels so they could stay longer.

“We had the best time.

I’ve had the best telly career ever and that ended with Benidorm. And it’s still on telly every day.

“I’d be back in a flash if Derren brought it back. I’ve told him that.” Derren insists there will be no more – but Sherrie, 69, is not so sure. “Never say never,” she says.

“I never go two steps without somebody stopping me saying they were thrilled it’s on Netflix.”

Sherrie has even been wearing her show clobber in lockdown. She says: “I have Joyce TempleSavage’s power dresses that I still wear.

“I have an evening dress from when we went to Neptune’s.”

The actress has been busy with her YouTube series Wonderbirds in which she is joined by Harriet Thorpe, Debbie Arnold and Dee Anderson to chat with celebrity friends.

Sherrie says: “We have a prosecco every Saturday… it’s 10am. By the time we finish, you can’t hear what we’re saying! It’s hysterical.”

She says the four shows a week have got her through lockdown. “You get up and you’re feeling dark and down. Then we all get on Zoom and have a laugh.

“We’ve had Paul O’Grady on, Gok Wan… we’re not restricted like on telly, we can say what we want. It’s joyous.

“When Tony Maudsley was on, he asked how my chihuahua was and I said, ‘It was wet through the other day, I had to dry it and be careful not to burn it’. It got sillier and sillier, ruder and ruder.”

Other guests include Absolutely Fabulous favourite Harriet Thorpe, former EastEnder Debbie Arnold and actress Dee Anderson.
