Beatles club faces death by lockdown

- BY JOHN KELLY

CORONAVIRUS could shut Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club forever.

The venue made famous by The Beatles is said to have lost £30,000 a week since March.

It is preparing to reopen at 30 per cent of capacity but has already made 20 people redundant and 20 more face the axe.

The city council wants the Government to help.

Mayor Joe Anderson said: “The prospect of losing a national jewel like The Cavern is horrible.”

The club is a reconstruction near the demolished original that hosted The Beatles and other greats.

Director Bill Heckle said: “We made a decision years ago to keep money in the bank for a rainy day, not realising it was going to be a thunderstorm.”
