Surfer fights off shark as it attacks wife

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

A SURFER jumped on to a shark’s back after it locked its jaws on his wife’s leg.

Mark Rapley grappled with the predator as it sunk its teeth into the back of Chantelle Doyle’s thigh.

After being repeatedly punched the shark let go – leaving the mum of one with serious injuries.

Ms Doyle, 35, of Sydney, Australia, was taken to hospital in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, then flown for urgent surgery in Newcastle.

Lifeguard group leader Steven Pearce said: “We’ve had some really serious and tragic shark encounters over the past couple of months on the New South Wales coast.”

Lifeguards hunted the shark using jet-skis and drones after the attack at 9.30am yesterday.
