Crown’s Helena gave Princess a rum deal
She wasn’t true to mother figure I knew says Susannah
Helena Bonham Bo Carter’s tu turn as Princess M Margaret in The Crown has won her legions of fans – but did not impr impress everyone.
Fashion Fashio guru and TV host Susannah Susa Constantine , a pa pal of the princess, tho thought her portrayal wa was “s***” – and says Hel Helena was nothing like the royal rebel.
O Outspoken Susannah nah, 54, dated Margaret’s son David, Viscount Linley Linley, for eight years in the 1 1980s.
Sh She recalls the Qu Queen’s sister as a motherly mo figure and sa says Helena did not re resemble Margaret at all. She says of the Netflix show: “It’s a story we know so well. I thought, ‘Is it going to be interesting?’ Quite clearly it’s amazing, I just haven’t got round to watching it.”
The small bit she did see was apparently not amazing, though.
“I was fascinated to see how [she] portrayed Margaret. And I thought it was s***,” she says.
“She’s an amazing actress but everything was wrong. The colours she wore were wrong. The way they styled her hair was wrong. It was like they’d got the wrong person and she was trying to portray Elizabeth Taylor.”
Susannah was more taken with Vanessa Kirby, 32, who had the role before Helena, 58, came in as an older Margaret in series three.
Talking to her singer pal Lulu on Instagram, Susannah remembers Margaret – whose attitude earned her the nickname “Her Rude Highness” – as loving and caring. Recalling one boozy bash, the What Not To Wear star says: “We were in Mustique at this party, now infamous, called the Peacock Ball.
“Princess Margaret lent me the most beautiful sari. Due to a combination of too much rum punch, the excitement and the heat, I passed out and stood up and started throwing up.
“She took me to the bathroom and was with me for an hour-anda-half mopping up the mess and taking care of me. That’s the woman I remember and loved.”
