Time travel

-

Mallorca’s rise began in 1905, when the Mallorca Tourist Board was founded. One of the first Spanish package holiday destinations in the 50s, the Balearic island has been at the forefront of tourism ever since.

In 1964, the tourist board sought to surprise its millionth visitor by greeting them at the airport with a band and dancers.

When the aircraft doors opened, an English woman emerged, smiling and waving. But tourism bosses had to tell her the show was for a couple behind her, from Manchester, not her.

She said: “I thought all this was because I’d written so much about the island. I’m Agatha Christie.”

The tourist board couldn’t believe they missed the opportunity.

Two-thirds of Brits would not bother with travel insurance for their next overseas holiday, according to new research. The report from comparethemarket.com says this could be due to confusion over whether policies will cover claims related to coronavirus.

A spokeswoman said: “It is worrying to see many potential holidaymakers will risk travelling without insurance, despite many providers offering comprehensive cover for Covid-19 related claims.

‘’Having appropriate insurance in place is still as important as ever.’’
