HOPES RISE FOR INDIA TOUR

- BY RICHARD EDWARDS

ENGLAND are waiting on India to give them the green light to tour in the new year.

Joe Root’s side are slated to begin their 2021 campaign by playing two Tests in Sri Lanka before heading north to face Virat Kohli’s side. The next 18 months promise to be the busiest in Test history as countries scramble to make up the matches that have fallen foul of the coronavirus.

England cut short their tour to Sri Lanka back in March as the pandemic struck.

Mickey Arthur, the Sri Lanka coach, is now hopeful that the country will be able to welcome the Barmy Army with open arms early next year.

He said: “Domestic cricket here is always being played with crowds in place. It’s almost business as usual.

“I would love to think that will be the case if and when England come here too.

“It would provide a massive boost to the local economy and also to Test cricket as a whole.

“When England left back in March it left a huge hole. It would be great to see the

Barmy Army back here soon.”
