Hassles of Lionesses’ new boss

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

NEW Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman got a close-up and personal view of the perils of being a football manager – after FIFA had named her women’s coach of the year.

It was in the summer of 2017 when Wiegman was given the ultimate accolade after leading Holland to European Championship success.

The only problem was that her husband Marten was then axed as boss of amateur Dutch club SC Monster after relegation.

Wiegman, who will succeed Phil Neville as head coach next summer, said: “That was not nice, but we know the football world is very volatile.

“It was an awkward situation at home, but we were able to handle it. And our daughters Sacha and Lauren are still playing football at SC Monster.”

Wiegman, 50, had an instant impact on the Dutch women’s team after being promoted from assistant coach in 2016.

Within six months, they were European champions and two years later were in the World Cup Final.
