1 in 3 will teach less than 5 years

A THIRD of new teachers quit within five years – more than ever before.

Teachers’ unions say workloads, stress and low pay are to blame – and warn that extra strain during the pandemic could mean worse to come.

NASUWT head Dr Patrick Roach said: “The pandemic has contribute­d to rising levels of anxiety and workrelate­d stress among teachers which need to be taken seriously.

“As schools reopen, expectatio­ns on teachers must be manageable.”

He said a nine-year low in trainees is leading to a staffing “crisis”.
