Surgeons’ Big Mac and prise
NINE medics ate Big Macs to fuel themselves before removing the donor organs that saved Aaron.
Consultants, scientists and nurses were dispatched to retrieve the heart and lungs. Preparing kit to receive the organs took five
hours, then they had a window of 30 minutes to retrieve them. Surgeon Marius Berman said: “We were absolutely exhausted after putting the kit together. The meal charged our batteries. When we finished our burgers we were ready to remove the organs. It was the first time we had done it and it was a tremendous team effort.” At Cambridge, two surgeons transplanted the organs. Dr Berman added: “Aaron was teetering on the brink.
“The organs became available just when we needed them.”
