STAFF at KFC and McDonald’s in scandal-hit Telford are being trained to spot behaviour which could expose paedophile gangs.

West Mercia Police say crimes like theft can be a sign of exploitation. Perpetrators could be working for gangs behind child sexual abuse, drug operations or modern slavery.

The force, which also advises pubs, hotels and community groups, said: “We’ve already worked with staff at service stations as part of our fuel theft initiative and are really pleased that we are now rolling this out to staff at drive-through restaurants.

“As a result of training we have received calls around suspicious behaviour. Staff play an important role in helping us protect the most vulnerable. They are our eyes and ears and may see or hear something that could prove crucial in helping to prevent crime. The training will help staff to spot these signs.”

The move comes after Deliveroo riders were trained by the NSPCC to spot signs of child abuse and neglect during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Sunday Mirror revealed in 2018 how up to 1,000 child sex victims had been exploited in Telford.
