A chimp’s gleeparty

Food was strewn everywhere and, well, it really did look like a chimp’s tea party. But it was a messy treat with a purpose as staff threw a bash to mark the 13th birthday of chimpanzee Tuli at Twycross Zoo, West Mids.

There was cake filled with berries, oats and fruity water and food was scattered around for happy Tuli and her pals to enjoy.

Curator Neil Dorman explains: “Keepers are very creative in ways to enrich animals – a way to increase activity levels and encourage them to use natural behaviours, such as foraging.”

Tuli was born at the zoo, which is renowned for its conservation work – though bosses recently acknowledged using chimps in TV ads was wrong.

Twycross has launched a Summer of Survival campaign backed by actress Dame Judi Dench. She said: “Twycross may close, putting animals at risk. How ironic if a charity dedicated to combating extinction, should itself become extinct.”
