WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT... Sleep apnoea

-

“Many people with sleep apnoea have no idea they have it – but you might find your partner complains about your excessive snoring,” says Dr Deborah Lee ( ).

In sleep apnoea, soft tissue at the back of the throat falls forwards during sleep, blocking the airway.

That causes your breathing to stop for around 10 seconds, before it restarts with a gasp.

Other symptoms include daytime sleepiness and loss of libido.

“Diagnosis requires a brainwave test, which is taken overnight in a sleep centre,” says Dr Lee.

“Your GP may suggest using a device which brings the jaw forwards while you are asleep, or an air pressure mask which will hold your airways open.”

Other ways you can try to ease the problem include losing weight, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol and sleeping on your side.

But always talk to your doctor as well. “It can be serious, so if you suspect you have it, speak to your GP as soon as possible,” adds Dr Lee.
