I could get Bess out of us... if selected

- SIMON MULLOCK

ASHES hero Graeme Swann has offered to help turn Dom Bess into a world-class spinner.

Swann, who played 60 Tests over 13 years, believes Bess has the potential to help England become the top Test team in the world, with back-to-back series against India then an Ashes visit to Australia.

He has admitted he would love to return to the England fold as part of Chris Silverwood’s coaching team.

The 41-year-old (right), who took 255 wickets for his country, said: “If England want someone to work with Dom Bess, my telephone number hasn’t changed.

“We are facing three huge series on the bounce and, in terms of spin options, we’re a little bit short to be going to India and Australia.

“At 23, Dom has got a lot of potential and a long time in the game ahead of him – and I think he can become a proper Test player. He isn’t the finished article – and Dom will admit that himself – but he has got all the tools.

“When I played for England, I was fortunate to work with Mushtaq Ahmed. We never spoke about the technical side of the game, it was all about preparing myself mentally.

“Ninety-five per cent of Test cricket is played in your head. The hardest thing to do is convince yourself that it’s still the same game you have played all your life.

“I really do think it’s daft not to tap into the minds of people who cracked it. It would be great to work with Dom – and also Jack Leach – because I think I can help them become better bowlers.”

Betfair ambassador Swann added: “When Jimmy Anderson retires, he should be made England’s bowling coach that very same day. There’s no sense in letting him leave the set-up, maybe go to Lancashire for a few years and learn the ropes.

“Jimmy knows the ropes – and when you finish, you are fresh, you are current, you know the grounds, you know the opposition.

“That is surely the best time to tap into that experience?

“It’s good to see Ian Bell working with the Under-19s team and Jonathan Trott has now come back into the set-up to help the batsmen.

“I’d help in any way I can. I’ve got something to offer because I am pretty sure the Test wickets I took were not all down to luck.”
