Test site? No, not a trace...

- BY NIGEL NELSON Political Editor

PEOPLE with Covid-19 symptoms were furious when Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s NHS website directed them to a testing centre that did not exist.

It had said there were 15 appointments available at a new mobile site in Otford, Kent – but they found an empty car park.

And health officials are unable to say whether there are other phantom testing sites across the land.

Louise Chick-Smith, who lives four miles away, said: “A gentleman at the shed opposite said there had been 18 cars looking for this imaginary testing centre. What’s the Government playing at?”

Sevenoaks District Tory councillor

Claire Nelson said people were being sent there “on a wild goose chase”.

The county’s public health team had asked the council to identify testing sites. Sevenoaks Council leader Peter Fleming said: “They didn’t even do a site visit before it went live on the website.”

Otford was later removed and the Department of Health said it was “aware of an issue” with the site.
