Kids sit on their screens in bed

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

ALMOST two-thirds of primary school children sleep with a screen in their rooms at night – and a tenth of parents admit they have no idea what their youngsters are watching.

A poll found 61 per cent of five to 11-year-olds had a laptop, TV, tablet or phone with them when they went to bed.

The average child spends 16 hours a week looking at screens at home, while a quarter watches for 30 hours.

And parents admit screen use soared in lockdown as they struggled to juggle jobs and childcare, while 93 per cent of the 1,500 parents polled by retailer Create and Craft fear children spend far too long on technology.

Weekends with bad weather were another problem time, with 37 per cent admitting their kids spend most of a rainy day in front of a screen.

Frances Busby of Create and Craft said: “They are often quite literally left to their own devices.”
