US group close in on Cats deal

CATS TAKEOVER Stewart Donald could retain a stake

SUNDERLAND are understood to be in advanced talks with an American investor over a £35million takeover.

And it is believed that Black Cats’ owner Stewart Donald, and fellow shareholders Juan Sartori and Charlie Methven, could retain minority stakes in the League One club if the deal goes through.

After fans’ groups mounted a campaign demanding Donald’s exit, Sunderland confirmed in January that the insurance tycoon, and former Eastleigh FC owner, was ready to sell up.

That intention was underlined in July as he resigned as chairman of the League One club, after quoting an asking price of £37.6m.

US group FPP – Glenn Fuhrman, John Phelan and Robert Platek – were close to a deal over a year ago, but instead loaned the Black Cats’ holding company, Madrox Partners, nearly £10m.

Others who have looked to buy Sunderland in the past also include US-based British businessman Mark Campbell, ex-Birmingham City vice-chairman Sammy Yu and William Storey, the CEO of drink brand Rich Energy.
