KOMPANY HIRES VOLLEY EXPERT

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

VINCENT KOMPANY has turned to a top women’s volleyball coach to help him turn his Anderlecht team into winners.

Manchester City captain has added Gert Vande Broek to his coaching staff after admitting his players needed to get ruthless.

Anderlecht secured a vital 3-1 victory at Kortrijk on Friday night, and have lost just one of their opening 10 games of the season.

But five draws have left the Brussels club off the pace at the top of the table – and Kompany has been forced to defend himself from some fierce criticism in the Belgian media.

Vande Broek, who guided Belgium to the bronze medal at the 2013 European Volleyball Championships, is also a professor who specialises in the fields of leadership and group dynamics.

Kompany has spent the last year trying to persuade him to join the Anderlecht backroom staff.

His former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola (above, left) leans heavily on Olympic water polo champion Manel Estiarte – and Kompany saw how successful athletes from other sports can help bring a winning mentality to football.

A defiant Kompany (above, right), who rejoined Anderlecht after leaving the Etihad in the summer of 2019, said: “My team would be top of the league if games ended after 80 minutes.

“We concede so many goals in the final stages of matches.

“We are working on things at Anderlecht, but I have a very young team. We are the youngest team in the division in Belgium.

“That is not an excuse. In a few years time these players will be playing at the World Cup.

“They are the best, but they have to gain experience.”
