Mowatt hits

BARNS­LEY skip­per Alex Mowatt did it again as he cracked home a stun­ning won­der goal for the sec­ond time in a week.

And his early strike earned new boss Valerien Ismael his sec­ond win in his first five days in charge at Oak­well.

Mowatt’s 25-yard drive that came out of nowhere not only beat keeper Ben Fos­ter hands down but it also stunned high­fly­ing Wat­ford as they were con­demned to only their sec­ond de­feat of the sea­son.

Ismael said: “I’m so proud of the boys who have given me the per­fect start to my job with two con­sec­u­tive wins.

And he said of Mowatt: “Alex is our cap­tain and he un­der­stood im­me­di­ately what I wanted from him and the team – to press hard and high, to win the ball and to shoot from dis­tance. It was a great goal and he had a big in­flu­ence on the game. He led us well out there.”

Wat­ford may have a pow­er­packed team of in­ter­na­tional tal­ent, hop­ing to bounce straight back to the Premier League but Barns­ley upped their game and, though they were un­der pres­sure for long spells, they dealt with it all.
