Evans can’t believe it

- Gillingham

GILLINGHAM manager

Steve Evans saw his team lose a fifth successive match and said they shouldn’t have lost four of them.

Late goals from Chris Maguire (penalty) and Lyndon Gooch at Priestfield gave visiting Sunderland victory against a side who missed a spot-kick of their own through

Jordan Graham and had Alex Macdonald sent off. Evans said: “It was more of the same, a really good performance and chances not taken.

“The best team has lost. Nobody is going to believe that when we’re only on iFollow and a large percentage of the fans don’t see it but that’s an outstanding Gillingham performance. We’re at the stage where I’d accept it being rubbish and we win. We’ve lost five games in a row – we should have drawn two and won two.”

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson said: “That’s a great win. When you come here and see the rain driving down and there are gale-force winds, it suits the Steve Evans way of playing. We came here twice last year and battled but didn’t play. I thought we got that balance right this time.”
