Star considered comic catchphrase for coat of arms

LOVABLE rogue Del Boy was never lost for words – even if they weren’t the right ones.

But actor Sir David Jason had to think beyond the linguistic limitations of his most famous character when it came to a motto for his crest.

Only Fools and Horses star David, 80, revealed he had considered using the phrases, “Lovely jubbly”,

“You know it makes sense” or “This time next year, we’ll be millionaires” on his coat of arms.

But he turned away from the wheeler-dealing world of the Trotters for a phrase to reflect his work ethic and six decades in showbiz. He said: “I thought I would go more into things that resonate with a grander scale.”

Jason eventually picked the Latin phrase Conata Perficere, which means to achieve what one attempts.

His real coat of arms also includes important aspects of his life, such as the masks of comedy and tragedy. David, who sought help to create the crest after admitting he is not used to “any of these posh things”, said: “I have this rather strange coat of arms but it is representative of things that happened to me or things I have loved, so it is very identifiable.

“To achieve what you attempt is what I really have always done in my life – or tried to.” David told how he finds it “difficult to cope” with public adoration and always wears a big coat and a cap when he goes out. But he added: “Now we have got this dreaded Covid-19 and I have to wear a mask, I can go anywhere. I am rea l ly Mr

Anonymous.”
