After playing the glamorous sidekick to mutant turtles and transforming robots, Megan Fox gets her first lead in an action movie. It takes a while to get used to her as Sam O’Hara, leader of a team of grizzled mercenaries tasked with rescuing a young kidnapped woman (Jessica Sutton) from a gang of Islamist terrorists. But Fox handles the heavy weaponry and the duff dialogue surprisingly well.

Director MJ Bassett starts off brightly too with a well-staged and mildly thrilling raid on the African base of Adam Deacon’s cockney jihadi.

Sadly, the excitement peters out shortly after a jeep chase with Deacon and his thugs. Sam and her crew take refuge in the abandoned hideout of a gang who have been illegally breeding lions for the Chinese quack medicine industry.

As preachy speeches hammer home the film’s conservationist agenda, the action movie morphs into a shockingly cheap creature feature.

It turns out that after eating their captors, most of the big cats fled from the hideout. But one ropey CGI lioness is still on the prowl.

When Deacon’s mob finally rolls up, it becomes increasingly clear that Bassett isn’t on the side of humans.

Sadly, the furry CGI avenger isn’t quite in the same safari park as the singing stars of Disney’s recent Lion King reboot. It looks like her natural habitat isn’t the African savannah but a late 90s’ video game.
