Be grateful during lockdown part two

-

This week saw me pass another landmark date. It’s one that neither my doctors, nor I, believed was possible in November 2014 when I was told I had incurable prostate cancer that had spread to other parts of my body, and may only have two years to live. I know lockdown has put the dampers on so many things, but I promise you, for me just being here is enough. Of course, in an ideal world I would like to have celebrated with friends and wider family, but having the privilege to spend a day with my wife Sarah and youngest son Ollie was quite enough.

I think of all the experiences I have been a part of in the last 12 months. Its been so varied, from being awarded a British Empire

Medal by the Queen to running 2,600 laps of my back garden fundraising in the first lockdown. Then I think of simple things like every meal or evening spent watching TV as a family, precious time and memories.

We managed one night away to celebrate before lockdown this week. It was enough just to walk along the beach in Whitstable and throw some stones into the sea together and not worry about what will or won’t be in the next year of my cancer.

Watching the Pride of Britain Awards last week made me feel somewhat inadequate in perspective of what I have done, and cemented the feeling of privilege that I have to still be part of life in all its guises. The programme yet again inspired me to do more within my abilities and confines of life for my family and others. I hope that you were similarly motivated to change something for the better too.

Until next week

Kev
