Remembering foreign fields

-

On July 1, 2021, it will be the 105th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme which raged until November 18, 1916.

Sadly, the first day also marked the bloodiest day of the battle with 20,000 allied soldiers lost. The Sunken Lane and the Hawthorn Mine Crater were the scene of the start of the battle. Many historic sites are dotted across this area of Northern France, such as the Ulster Tower and Thiepval Memorial.

A five-day tour also takes in the battlefields of Ovillers, La Boisselle, Mametz and Montauban – which were all part of the greater Somme conflict.

Photos of soldiers are displayed in the village of Vignancourt and there will be moving visits to Heilly Station Cemetery and the battlefields where so-called Pals battalions were based, bringing the horror of Britain’s most devastating conflict to life.

A five-day tour starts from £459pp. Departs June 28. legerbattlefields.co.uk
