The centenary of the tomb of the Unknown Warrior, commemorated with a solid gold quarter sovereign, struck on Remembrance Day.

-

This year we mark 100 years since the Unknown Warrior was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey on 11th November 1920, two years after the end of the First World War. The nature and scale of the war meant that many soldiers fell in battle but were unable to be buried. To honour these men an unidentified British soldier from the battlefields in France was buried with due ceremony in Westminster Abbey ‘amongst the kings and queens of this land’ to represent all those who fell in battle and had no proper burial. The 100th anniversary of this ceremony - the burial of the Unknown Warrior - offers us an opportunity to pay tribute to the many fallen soldiers and to ensure their sacrifice is forever remembered.

That’s why, as part of the centenary commemorations, an exceptional quarter sovereign will be minted

2020 - one hundred years to the day - that the Unknown Warrior was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey.

To ensure their historical significance, all of the 2020 Unknown Warrior 100th Anniversary Gold Quarter Sovereign coins will be minted on just one day - Remembrance Day. This will dramatically increase their appeal to collectors. However, there is a limiting effect of this too: the number of coins that can be minted all on one day is quite small, and so the mintage of this coin is a very low 999 coins.

Collectors of limited edition gold sovereign coins will know just how small this mintage is, and just how keenly sought-after they are likely to be.

So, the added significance of being minted solely on Remembrance Day will increase demand, but that very same attribute will mean the number of coins available is small.

It’s likely to create some vigorous market action.

The design on this commemorative quarter sovereign will be immediately familiar to many of us – that of the unknown soldier, the regular army ‘Tommy’ who fought in the First World War.

The soldier stands in profile with his pack on his back and rifle in hand. His silhouette appears beside him, an indicator of the many who fell on the battlefields in service of their country and never returned home. The background of the coin reveals a circular etched pattern to represent the stained glass windows of Westminster Abbey, where the tomb of the Unknown Warrior lies. after which the price will be £199. Each coin comes with a 60 day full right of return. Applicants must be aged 18 years or over and this offer is subject to availability. A strict limit of one coin per household applies.
