Wan day ...but not for Euros

- By STEVE BATES

GARETH SOUTHGATE rates Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the Premier League’s best defensive full back – but that’s still not enough to earn him a senior England cap.

Wan-Bissaka will not earn that honour until he can also attack like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Reece James.

United splashed £45million to sign the 22-year-old Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace last year.

But Three Lions boss Southgate gives the Old Trafford star a slim chance of making the squad for the delayed Euro 2020 finals next summer.

Southgate said: “There’s no question that one-against-one Aaron’s as good as I’ve seen, getting a foot in and extending that leg at remarkable angles to dispossess wingers – so of course we track him.

“But Trent and Reece have played as wing backs and have tremendous attacking attributes.

“I know Aaron has played as a wing back for United but the defensive side of his game is stronger than his attacking one.

“He’s playing in big matches all the time but we have players like Reece, who was absolutely outstanding for us last month, and Kyle was our best defender in our last games.

“So that area of the pitch is probably where we are stronger in terms of depth than any other position in our squad.

“It’s really about balance all the time with those players.

“We’d certainly never rule out a good player like Aaron – he’s playing for a top club so we have to track him – but at the moment we feel those others are ahead of him.”
