SUNK IN PORT Pompey hit the minnows for six

- By STEVE JUDGE at Fratton Park

Ian Culverhouse’s National League upstarts upset Port Vale in the first round to set up a trip to the 2008 FA Cup winners.

But the writing was on the wall inside the two minutes it took Rasmus Nicolaisen to head Pompey ahead from a corner.

Skipper Tom Naylor hit a 25yard scorcher to double the lead on 30 minutes.

That wonder strike was harsh on Lynn who had recovered from the early setback to create three decent chances, but failed to hit the target with any.

It was costly as Sean Raggett, Marcus Harness, Ellis Harrison and Jordy Hiwula- Mayifuila added second- half goals with substitute Dayle Southwell hitting a 68th-minute consolation.

Boss Culverhouse admitted the finishing was where the 57 places between the two teams in the football pyramid really showed.

He said: “The gulf in class showed. They were ruthless. We were hoping to catch them when their attitude was not right but they were spot on.

“Our character from conceding so early was good and we got a bit of belief and broke on them a couple of times and when a chance arose we were not good enough to take them.

“What those lads have done for the club is unbelievable and they have gone down in history with this run.

“Now we have one of the biggest games of the season against Bromley on Tuesday.”

Pompey killed the tie off with their first corner of the second half.

Ronan Curtis hung up a high ball to the far post and Raggett rose unchallenged to head in.

Then Harness slotted home a fourth in the 58th-minute with an angled low left- foot shot. Southwell struck an almost identical finish to grab a consolation for Lynn.

But moments later Ross Barrows’s late challenge on Cam Pring resulted in a penalty which Harrison converted and Hiwula bent in a sixth in the 80th minute from just inside the box.

It left manager Kenny Jackett hoping for a Premier League side in the third round.

He said: “We’re really happy to get through. At 1-0 they had their moments. We’d like a Premier League club at Fratton Park in the next round.”
