History shakers CHORLEY STUNNER

- By GEOFF KNOX at the Weston Homes Stadium

JAMIE VERMIGLIO revealed his pre-match team talk inspired his history boys to shock League One Peterborough.

National League South side Chorley simply blew away their high-flying opponents, who sit 88 league places above the Lancashire minnows.

Having fallen behind to Jack Taylor’s secondminute screamer, the Magpies recovered with second-half goals from Connor Hall and Lewi s Baines.

The surprise scoreline could have been even more embarrassing for Darren Ferguson’s men if Christy Pym had not saved Harry Cardwell’s late penalty.

Chorley manager Vermiglio said: “The team talk was just write your own history. You read about these things and you see them on Match of the

Day. You see someone scoring and then getting all the attention, so I said, ‘ Why not one of you lads? Why not us?’ Let’s go and do it.

“Now they’ve written their own little piece of history and no-one can take that away.”

When Taylor netted for the hosts from Ryan Broom’s corner it looked as if Posh would rain on Chorley’s parade.

BT’s live cameras had turned up hoping for the non- leaguers to pull off another cup shock, following Chorley’s brilliant first- round win over formerwinners Wigan.

Yet the visitors looked out of luck w h e n they were twice denied by the woodwork before the break, and Vermiglio added: “Sometimes you feel like it’s not going to be your day. But, even at half-time, it was a strange feeling as the lads honestly had more belief than at the beginning.

“But we went out and showed a lot of character. We were on them from the first kick of the second half and we deserved the win.”

Crestfallen Posh chief Fergie said: “Shocks like this are what the FA Cup is about.

“These games are televised because of the chance of a shock and they got exactly what they came here for.

“I’ve got no complaints as we were second-best all over the pitch and we should have lost by more in all truth.

“Sometimes in a Cup match you can lose to a deflection or have complete domination, but the other team score.

“But that wasn’t the case today and I have to dig a bit deeper to get to the bottom of a performance that was completely unacceptable.”
