Bruno to jump up pay scale
want to keep the Portuguese international happy as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to rebuild a team that has now gone seven years without the Premier League title.
Fernandes currently earns £100,000 a week but that is way below the club’s top earners.
David de Gea earns £350,000 and Paul Pogba is on £300,000.
Fernandes’ salary is at the same level as Jesse Lingard and No.2 keeper Dean Henderson.
United want to hand him a pay hike that will reflect his value to the club.
Fernandes was named the fans’ Player of the Year last season despite arriving halfway through the campaign.
He is desperate to add to a trophy collection that currently stands at one Portuguese Cup medal and two Portuguese League Cups.
The Porto-born midfielder has not been slow in lambasting his team-mates if they aren’t performing.
His influence in the dressing room is a big factor in United’s determination to hand him a salary that reflects his status.
Fernandes’ value to the club was again in evidence yesterday as he inspired United’s comeback win at West Ham after coming on as a half-time substitute.
United were 1-0 down after the first 45 minutes but Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford turned the tables on the Hammers, as they eventually ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.
Solskjaer said: “We had to use Bruno. Forty-five minutes was enough for him to do it. We’re very happy with our away form. We are getting better at home. And we are moving up the table.
“The players still believe in themselves. At the end of the season, you don’t care about performances, it’s about winning.”
