Bees get Port shrift

- By RON LEWIS at the Brentford Community Stadium

JACOB DAVENPORT’S late goal earned 10-man Blackburn a point, although Brentford were disappointed not to be celebrating in front of their fans for the first time at their new stadium.

Brentford had been cruising to victory before they were caught by Davenport’s (above) sucker punch, leaving boss Thomas Frank deflated.

“It is massively disappointing because we led against good opponents,” Frank said.

“We didn’t play positively enough. I wanted us to do that.”

Joe Rothwell fired Blackburn ahead, playing a one-two with Harvey Elliott midway into the Brentford half, before running past four Bees defenders and curling the ball beyond David Raya.

The match turned on its head in the 36th minute, when a Mathias Jensen flick sent Ivan Toney through. He muscled his way past Darragh Lenihan, who hauled him down, giving away a penalty and receiving a red card. Toney stroked home from the spot for his 14th goal of the season.

It was another brilliant goal that gave the home side the lead, as Sergi Canos picked the ball up on the left wing, cut past two defenders before sending a shot into the top corner.

But Brentford failed to kill the game off and after Dominic Thompson had failed to get the ball clear, Tyrhys Dolan worked the ball back into the area for Davenport to force it home.

“If we’d have kept 11 men on the field, I think we’d have got three points,” said Rovers manager Tony Mowbray. “We had to frustrate them and suck it in.” BRENTFORD: Raya 5; Dalsgaard 6, Jansson 6, Pinnock 5, Henry 6 (Thompson 81); Janelt 5 (Marcondes 46, 6), Dasilva 5 (Ghoddos 81); Canos 7 (Fosu 77), Jensen 7, Forss 6 (Mbeumo, 71 5); Toney 7.
