Dunny’s Hairdryer

-

SERIOUSLY, tax avoidance expert Julian Knight MP really cannot help himself.

Give politicians a bit of power and publicity and they go down the grandstanding route in a heartbeat.

Knight (above) is chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee and hopes you may have heard of him.

After all, he has been trying to generate a touch of fame out of the committee’s dubious remit over football and, in particular, the Premier League.

Last week, the Premier League and the EFL announced their agreement on a £250million rescue package – yet Knight was still banging on about the whole situation being a “fiasco”.

What is a fiasco? The Premier League cementing their commitment to make sure not one EFL club goes out of business because of the pandemic?

Fans getting backing into stadiums? The Premier League’s Covid protocols working so well that Villa v Newcastle was the first one to be postponed?

The Premier League and football might have got the odd thing wrong during the pandemic, but it has got more right than the risible Knight and his Tory mates.

GOING into what UEFA would like us to call Matchday Six, a couple of the eight Champions League qualifying groups are very much in the balance.

And that is two more than usual, which is why Europe’s blue riband club competition needs a revamp.

But any plan that has certain clubs guaranteed involvement regardless of their finishing positions in domestic leagues MUST be resisted at all costs.
