MOVIE MAGIC IN WREXHAM

- EXCLUSIVE BY JOHN RICHARDSON

PETER MOORE’S reign as Liverpool CEO climaxed with the club ending their 30-year wait for the top-flight title.

Add a Champions League triumph and life at Anfield wasn’t too bad for the 65-year-old who arrived having enjoyed a successful career at Sega, Microsoft and Electronic Arts.

But he feels the exploits of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson and company are matched by Wrexham players of the past like Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones and Arfon

Griffiths.

That’s why there was no hesitation in Moore, who was born in north Wales, saying yes to Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney’s and Ryan Reynolds’ request for him to act as a consultant in their surprise purchase of National League side Wrexham.

The former fans-run club is expected to be in American hands in a matter of days and Moore (above) recalled: “As a lad I went to the Racecourse Ground many times and also played there for Wrexham Schoolboys.

“I have some great memories and now under Rob and Ryan I believe there are more exciting times ahead.”

The pair have promised an immediate injection of £2million to help transform the club’s fortunes. “They are serious about Wrexham as a football club and as a town,”added Moore.

“They are in it for the long term. Wrexham belongs back in the Football League, although the National League is tough to get out of. Hopefully with the right investment we can bring the good times back to North Wales.”

Days when Wrexham under John Neal were playing in football’s second tier and sparking the careers of legends Thomas and Jones.

Thomas said: “I’ve had a long conversation with Peter and some of the plans appear very exciting. Joey and I played in the same schoolboys side as Peter. To be fair he wasn’t a bad player but not as good as Joey and I!

“We need the right people in place and Peter’s experience at Liverpool will certainly help.”

Actor and director McElhenney (left) first thought of buying a British football club after watching the Netflix series ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’. Already the cameras are rolling in Wrexham recording the takeover and cynics say another Netflix-style documentary will more than pay for the pair’s football outlay.

But Moore, who is in the process of selling his Wirral home to live in California, insisted: “They are fully committed to the club and community.”

He will be living within a couple of hours of the Hollywood pair as the trio direct operations from the other side of the Atlantic but added: “There’s no way that they will be absentee landlords.”
