GABBY: I’D PLAY FOR NO WAGES

- BY ROSS HEPPENSTALL

GABBY AGBONLAHOR has been targeted by ambitious Worcester Raiders as they bid to bring the former Aston Villa striker to Sixways.

Agbonlahor, who won three England caps more than a decade ago, is a free agent and has declared himself ready to pull on his boots again.

The Villa legend retired after being released by his hometown club in 2018, ending a 13-yearrelationship with the side he supported as a boy.

Agbonlahor (above), who was only 31 at the time, made nearly 400 appearances and scored more than 80 goals for Villa, making him a firm fans’ favourite. The talkSPORT pundit, 34, tweeted on Wednesday: “Been told to come out of retirement should I for a couple years for a bit of fun? I’d sign anywhere for zero wages just for love of game let me know.”

Worcester Raiders chairman Steve Harris said: “There are big plans for this club and potential for Gabby to come here.

“We’ll contact him and put an offer on the table and it would be fantastic to see someone of Agbonlahor’s stature playing for us at Sixways.

“It would underline our ambition as a club as we look to get promoted this season, move up through the football pyramid and into the Football League in the next decade. We pay our players and certainly have the funds to bring Gabby on board.”

The Raiders play in the West Midlands League Premier Division at Sixways Stadium, home of Premiership rugby union outfit Worcester Warriors.

The clubs are under the same ownership and Harris said: “Worcester City, our neighbours have, sadly, never made it into the Football League.

“But there is a population in Worcester of 102,000, so the city is big enough to sustain a Football League club.

“There are a lot of Villa fans around here and I’ve no doubt that, if we signed Agbonlahor, a lot of them would follow us.”
