Social media eco tsar to get £70k
BORIS Johnson is seeking an eco tsar to push his “green revolution” on social media – less than a year before the UK hosts major UN talks.
The £70,000-a-year role will involve rallying top influencers and “activating talent and celebrity partnerships”.
The initiative, ahead of November’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, comes after the
Sunday Mirror revealed how social media influencers earned thousands promoting the Covid-19 test and trace service.
Love Island stars Shaughna Phillips, Josh Denzel and Chris Hughes were paid for telling Instagram followers testing is “vital to stop the spread”.
The new tsar could find themselves working with the likes of TOWIE’s Gemma Collins, 39, who claims to be the UK’s answer to Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg – who turns 18 today.
Asking if Mother Nature was happy, Gemma said: “I don’t think she is.
“When the moon changes my breasts swell up.” And she insisted last month: “You’ve got to look after nature. I want to make the world a better place.” The relationship manager will have support from UK diplomats to “manage partnerships with high-profile influencers around the globe” until March next year.
The UK’s COP26 Instagram account currently has just 8,408 followers.
Former UN climate envoy Mary Robinson claimed last February the summit was not being given enough priority.
She said: “The UK asked for this, they pitched for this responsibility – they must carry it forward. Their handling of COP26 has not [been] coherent.”
