A HOTTER CURRY ON SALE’S MENU

- NEIL SQUIRES

ELEVATING “scary”

Tom Curry to even greater heights will be new boss Alex Sanderson’s special project after taking charge at Sale.

The 22-year-old flanker – who was shortlisted for world player of the year in 2019 – is already on target for Lions selection this summer.

But Sanderson (right, above), a former

Sale and England back row himself, is aiming to turn Curry (right, below) into an all-time great for club and country.

He said: “When you watch Tom in detail you understand how many massive collisions he puts in.

“And how hungry he is not just to make tackles but big ones.

“We are very, very lucky to have someone of his skillset.

“Tom is a better player than I was or ever could have been.

“So quite how much I can teach him on the rugby front I don’t know.

“But with these guys sometimes it’s just about making sure they are in a good place mentally – and every now and again you can challenge them and get them to push themselves to the levels they can achieve.

“He hasn’t reached his potential yet and that is scary looking at him right now.

“I will call him over the weekend and get that ball rolling in terms of our professional relationship.”

England coach Eddie Jones names a 28-man squad for the Six Nations on Friday.

Sanderson, who worked with half of the national side at Saracens, wants more Sale involvement.

He said: “You want as many players as you can playing for their country.

“If they haven’t got that ambition they’re just in rugby for a laugh.

“You want them to be the best they can be.

“Excellence breeds excellence. If they are in and around that England squad they are going to get better and bring that back. I’ve a lot of respect for Eddie and his coaching acumen.”
