It’s much worse than PPI fiasco ..give us justice

- BY PETER BOTTOMLEY Tory MP and Father of the House of Commons

WE should rescue the living victims of the cladding disaster NOW.

Innocent occupiers are not responsible for the scandal of dangerous leasehold homes, so why should they face ruinous costs to pay for the mistakes of others who should have known better?

We know who contributed to making so many homes unsafe. Take your pick from this list – developers, builders, cladding suppliers, landlords and regulators.

This was all carried out under the failed safety approval system set up by Government and parliament.

The shocking fact is that this is worse than the

PPI failures.

Individuals, families and households in conventionally described leasehold homes are stuck and continue to suffer.

It is wrong to expect them to pay small fortunes for buildings they do not own. Ministers have said the leaseholder should not be liable. Over three-and-a-half years have gone by since so many tragically died in the Grenfell tower fire. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and our demand is that Government organises the money to make all homes safe at once.

Cladding remediation costs are not a service charge and should not be used as so to divert liabilities from those responsible for this epic crisis.

Do not wait until expected legal claims fill the law courts for the next five to 10 years. That is too long. Occupants cannot sell. Remedial work may not be done. Justice is the reason to indemnify the stranded leaseholder. Use the power of the State to make funding available. Recognise action is needed this day. Justice requires it.

It’s wrong that people pay a small fortune for crisis they didn’t cause PETER BOTTOMLEY PLEA TO RESCUE LEASEHOLDERS
