A serious message to all men on Planet

-

One of the things that gives me the biggest sense of worth is when I can join projects for Prostate Cancer UK that touch many people at once.

So when I was asked if I could record something with my wife to be used on the Planet Rock radio station for three weeks, starting tomorrow, I bit their arm off for the opportunity.

Not only was it fun recording the audio and video with my wife but it also gave me that sense of justification for what I live for, as Planet Rock has around 1.2 million weekly listeners.

They will hopefully get a better understanding of what prostate cancer is all about, and with one in eight men getting it, it should make a difference.

An added bonus for me was that my friend Errol McKellar was also involved in the project.

Mechanic Errol had prostate cancer and used his experience of being cured through early diagnosis to encourage other men, and offered a discount at his car workshop for any men who went and had a prostate check at their doctors.

He knows only too well the difference an early check can make. And being black, the odds of getting prostate cancer rise to one in four so his message is all the more important.

Like me, Errol was proud to be recognised in the

Queen’s birthday honours list last year, only he did one better than me and got an MBE, again making me proud that ordinary people like us are recognised for putting ourselves out for others.

Errol and I have been involved in several campaigns for Prostate Cancer UK over the last five years together.

Our confidence in what we do has grown over that time despite nervous beginnings.

I think it’s fair to say that we are both pleased we were brave enough to take that first step to share our stories for the good of others.

I hope that you too step up to the plate if ever you have an opportunity to make a difference, as everyone benefits when you take that first step!

Until next week, Kev
