Reign in Spain

Palma, Majorca

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

Hotel Cappuccino manages that rare thing in an upmarket hotel which is feeling relaxed while somehow still supremely elegant.

Smart and modern with a dash of history it occupies a large converted 19th-century building in the heart of Majorca’s capital city Palma. The 32 rooms are organised around a fabulous central courtyard with tropical palms and lush vegetation.

This gives the place a sultry, romantic vibe, which somehow evokes feelings of being on your very own Grand Tour.

The hotel is bright and colourful, just like the smartly dressed staff, and it feels very much like a shiny image of modern Spain.

The decor was laid out by Parisian designer Jacques Grange whose bold style can be seen throughout, not least from the wall of Mexican wrestling masks which greet you at reception.

But it is never gaudy, far from it, and there are lots of subtle touches throughout the hotel which evoke the nation’s links to its Moorish past such as marblelined floors.

POPULAR Rooftop pool is a great spot to relax further drive home the feeling you’re wandering the halls of a Moorish palace rather than a modern boutique hotel.

The rooftop pool area is a fabulously sunny spot to visit although it can get a little crowded up there rather quickly. The hotel also has a private 30-seat cinema which shows classic films.

FOOD & DRINK

Signature restaurant Cappuccino Grand Cafe occupies much of the ground floor, spilling delightfully out on to the main plaza and offers a very tasty range of food which is suited to young and old alike. Excellent tapas is also served every evening in the internal patio or on the

terrace.

SPA

The spa is quite well appointed for such a small hotel and offers two treatment rooms and a modest, if perfectly good, gym.

THE SIGHTS

The Hotel Cappuccino is set on the corner of the beautiful Placa de Cort in the heart of old town Palma. It overlooks the stunning court house opposite and the central plaza which as had a remarkable 600-year-old olive tree at its centre.
