‘Nathan’s stood the pressure’

- BY JOHN RICHARDSON

THE reply from loyal assistant Paul Hart on Nathan Jones’ shock return to Luton Town was a short and succinct, “Are you sure?!”

The Welshman, who had transformed the Hatters’ fortunes in his initial three years as manager, had received a torrent of abuse, including death threats after leaving for Stoke City.

The Potters adventure was terminated after just six wins in 38 games and, when Luton sacked his successor Graeme Jones, back in came Nathan – much to the anger of many Hatters fans.

Hart, who would later join him again, said: “When he told me, I replied, ‘Are you sure? Have you ticked all the boxes?’ He said yes, he felt it was right for him.

“But he was also aware that he was under immediate pressure to make a difference.

“I think it was a very brave move by both parties – No.1 for the club to ask him and No.2 for him to go back. But it’s a perfect fit, Nathan for Luton and vice versa.

“If he had failed, who knows? He knew it wouldn’t be a bed of roses. He had an open mind and he knew he had to earn everyone’s respect.”

Today, Jones and Hart take the Championship side to face Chelsea in the FA Cup, with boss Frank Lampard under pressure – but nothing like the maelstrom Jones endured.

“There was a bit of rancour when he left and all that sort of stuff – and when he returned,” added Hart. “He’s played here as well as managed and loves the club. It’s a brilliant football club – a great place to be.

“He has bounced back – and also with the fans. You saw that when we were able to have 2,000 in for one game. It looks like he has been accepted again.

They liked what they saw.”
