£1m target for Covidiots rescue man

A FUNDRAISER for a mountain rescuer who suffered life-changing injuries while helping two campers who were breaking lockdown rules is aiming to reach £1million.

Chris Lewis, 60, fell 500ft down a steep slope while on a call-out to Red Screes in the Lake District, to aid a 47-year-old man from Leicester with chest pains.

The man was taken to hospital and quickly recovered, but Mr Lewis, from the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, is expected to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

The casualty and his friend, from Liverpool, were fined for breaching travel restrictions.

THE brother of missing Moors murder victim Keith Bennett is backing a law change that could lead police to his body.

If passed, the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill would allow investigators warrants for material that could reveal the location of a murder victim’s remains.

It would let them access briefcases left by Ian Brady who, with Myra Hindley, murdered five kids between 1963 and 1965.

Brady, who died in 2017, refused to reveal where Keith, 12, was buried.

Alan Bennett, 64, said it would be a “legacy” for Keith, adding: “It will pave the way for other families in a similar situation.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel proposed the law.

PREMIER League soccer star Héctor Bellerín has told how he lectures his Arsenal teammates on green issues.

The 25-year-old vegan drives an electric car and plants 3,000 trees every time his team wins.

But he admits he is the “annoying friend” who scolds players about disposable fashion and throwaway face masks.

Bellerín, who has launched an organic recycled clothing line, said: “Everyone has a mask with our [shirt] number. And sometimes players forget it and they wear the ones we just throw away.

“I’m always saying, ‘You’re gonna throw these away? It’ll go in the ocean’.

“I can be a bit annoying. They make jokes, but deep inside, they are listening.”
