Fury as Irish baby death evidence lost

- BY MICHAEL McHUGH

A WOMAN has called for Ireland’s mother and baby homes inquiry to be extended after hearing that vital evidence had been destroyed.

The inquiry, into homes run by Catholic nuns, is due to be dissolved by law on February 28.

The homes looked after unmarried mums but had a far higher infant death rate than normal.

A woman called Siobhan who gave evidence in 2017 said: “Who destroys survivors’ testimonies? They should be in an archive.

“No survivor wants to tell their story again to have it destroyed.”

The Commission of Investigation has said back-up “disaster recovery” tapes have been found that may contain the recordings of 549 testimonies.
