Filmed mainly by actors in isolation then superimposed on CGI backdrops, this is a bold attempt to reinvent streamed theatre during lockdown.

Highlights include Derek Jacobi as the narrator, ripe vowels setting the scene for our pair of “star crossed lovers”, while Dear Evan Hansen star Sam Tutty shines as a sensitive, vulnerable Romeo.

Shakespeare’s genius, though, revels in rich exchanges as much as memorable monologues. Though the cast are committed, the basic special effects rarely convince us that the characters are together, which stifles the necessary sense of connection, while the cheap backdrops disappoint.

A noble failure in fair Verona but a tantalising glimpse of post-pandemic possibilities.
