Mum’s purls of wisdom
I grew up watching my mum knit. I remember being mesmerised by the rhythmic sound of her needles.
After a hard day’s work, she would put her feet up, get her wool out and just go into the zone – knitting away.
She made bags, scarves, sweaters and socks. I was amazed at her talent. She taught me to cast on and off and do the basic stitches, but I didn’t have the patience – I was more interested in playing hopscotch in the street.
Well, it’s funny how things come around because my 10-year-old daughter Amara was given a knitting starter kit for her birthday. She asked me to help her begin to make the bag shown on the front of the box.
Before I knew it, I had cast on 30 stitches and knitted 20 rows. I never knew this simple act could be so relaxing and rewarding.
Now I can completely appreciate why Mum was so into it and why knitting has seen such a revival over the last few years.
The internet is awash with knitting forums, groups and chats.
I never thought I’d ever say this, but I have to admit to being a dyed-in-thewool convert.
