Crackdown on two-for-one Easter eggs from next year
SWEET deals on Easter eggs are to be banned in an effort to fight obesity.
Two-for-one and three-for-two deals will end next year and shops will have to move eggs on special offer away from tills and entrances. Anti-obesity campaigners say aggressive sales of unhealthy foods fuel the growing health crisis.
The UK has the highest obesity rates in Western
Europe. Two-thirds of adults and a third of kids by secondary school are obese or overweight, say official figures. Obesity-related illnesses costs the NHS £6billion a year.
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said often a single egg exceeds an adult’s daily sugar allowance. He said: “To sell them as multibuys is irresponsible – they are no longer treats but health hazards.”
Easter Sunday 2022 is April 17 and shops could pre-empt the ban, in force from April 22.
