McGINN GOAL IS SIGN OF TALENT
I LOVED John McGinn’s strike for Scotland in midweek, and it brought back memories of one of my favourite ever goals.
It was against Charlton in 2001 in the final game of the season, and we needed to win to be sure of a Champions League place.
I scored two, but my overhead kick that day has always stuck with me.
It wasn’t a Pele-style spectacular, but a controlled one — guiding it into the net.
I like to think that showed I was a technical player, and McGinn’s goal certainly proved he has a real talent, and is made for a big stage.
He’s been unlucky with injuries, but you can see he’s coming back now to the sort of form that made many people believe he’d be a top-class talent.
There’s something about him, that easy technique and comfort on the ball, and he has a touch of quality.
I have connections in Scotland and I always like to see them do well, so I was delighted to see his goal.
It was probably better than mine too – but I still count that goal as being right up with the best I’ve scored.
