HUMAN RIGHTS TALKS PLANNED

- BY STEVE BATES

ENGLAND stars are planning to join Norway and Germany in taking a stance against Qatar’s human rights record ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Three Lions skipper Harry Kane will initiate a conversation among Gareth Southgate’s squad to formulate a response to the shocking death toll among migrant workers building stadiums in the Gulf State in readiness for the tournament.

It’s reported more than 6,500 workers have died at stadium sites with Qatar also under fire for poor pay and living conditions provided for construction labourers.

And after Norway and Germany players wore protest T-shirts before their qualifying games last week, Kane says England stars plan talks on their own response to the crisis.

“I think that’s a conversation we need to have among the players, the manager and the staff. We haven’t had that conversation yet but we will.

“We have a great relationship with the FA as players and I can’t see there being anything against it.

“Like we’ve done with taking the knee, I think it’s important to have everyone’s point of view and everyone in a room discussing what they feel and what they want to do.

“Then we can make a decision as a group and go forward with that.”

As yet it’s unclear if England will formulate their response at today’s game in Albania — or at Wembley on Wednesday against Poland.

An FA spokesperson said: “We are in regular contact with Amnesty International who are keeping us informed of developments, and also with FIFA, other Member Associations and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.”
