Republic humbled

- By DAVID SNEYD at the Aviva Stadium

UNDER-FIRE Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny was on the brink last night after the most embarrassing result of his 10-match winless reign.

His toothless team were beaten by minnows Luxembourg, and already qualification for the Qatar World Cup looks like a total long shot.

And if it were not for debutant Gavin Bazunu in goal Ireland the result could have been even heavier. But even the Manchester City rookie keeper could not prevent the 85th-minute winner by Gerson Rodriguez (above).

That is only Luxembourg’s fourth away victory ever in World Cup or European Championship qualifiers. In 125 games.

There was no disguising just how awful the Irish were, and Bazunu – on loan at Rochdale – had his work cut out.

Bazunu showed the basics of what makes a great keeper, cleverly saving when Rodrigues produced an audacious lob from 30 yards. Ireland’s best chance came when Alan Browne headed wide from a free-kick in the 55th minute.

It was a glorious opportunity but one Ireland couldn’t build on.

It was the visitors were looking more threatening as Kenny tinkered to work Ireland’s way back in.

Callum Robinson should have done better with a shot over the bar, but just as Ireland thought they would have to make due with a point, Rodrigues ensured that they got what they deserved... nothing.
