Get in the rat pack...

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

They have a reputation as being purely a pest, but World Rat Day – today – is intended to improve the image of these much-maligned rodents. Hundreds of incidents of pet rats being neglected, abused, injured and abandoned have been reported to the RSPCA in the past year.

The charity, which rehomed 60 rats, blames misconceptions about the creatures.

Dr Jane Tyson, RSPCA rodent welfare expert, said: “Rats are incredibly intelligent and can be trained to count, fetch a ball and high-five a human! Some have even been trained to locate landmines in war zones.

“They are more intelligent than given credit for, are very social animals and thrive off the company of other rats. They’d hate social distancing!

“Keeping them on their own can cause stress. Rats can make great pets as they’re friendly and enjoy human company. Owners can teach them tricks to keep them stimulated and enjoy relaxing time with them on the sofa. Many people would be surprised by how friendly pets rats can be.”
